Influences and Background

Mid-century modern began in the US based on earlier movements such as Bauhaus. The original German school of the arts, after World War II many Bauhaus architects began to migrate to the states. Not long after this, post-war America saw the swift expansion of many towns and cities and this resulted in quickly built modern homes such as those developed by Josef Eichler. Alongside sudden technological advances, a new demand also transpired, for modern furnishings, enigmatic textures and colours. Today, this iconic look is still a modern must-have and it effectively looks back on the future.

Distinguishing Features of Mid-Century Modern

At it’s most basic level mid-century modern is known for reimagining traditional pieces. Familiar, soft shapes are juxtaposed with sleek lines for a style that’s futuristic yet still connected to the past. Contrasting materials are also apparent in any mid-century modern scheme. This is things like vinyl, plywood, metal and glass, it’s understated with minimal fuss.

Oak Internal Doors and More

By understanding the distinctive features of mid-century modern, you can easily instil the look that you want. Sleek, laid back furniture is one way to do it, for instance, a classic Sawbuck chair in oak and walnut. Too much pattern, however, should be avoided and a strict colour scheme adhered to too. Also in terms of a solid favourite for interior wood doors, Doorsan’s American White Oak makes a classic choice.

Will This Trend Ever Go Out of Style?

At over fifty years old, mid-century modern shows no signs of slowing down yet. The original open-plan concept, it’s actually thanks to this trend the masses can now enjoy well-designed homes. So whether you love it or hate it, this timeless craze isn’t fizzling out anytime soon but what can we expect next from this retro trend? Who knows what the new decade will bring
