What is there to say about doors? This is a question that many of my friends and acquaintances often ask, but once we start discussing the subject they readily admit that there is a lot to know and a vast variation in the types of door designs and styles.
As I’ve mentioned before I’m an avid watcher of House Buying and Home Renovation programmes and I’m often surprised at what little thought and investment has been made on the doors fitted in some properties.
I recently watched an Escape to the Country episode, a programme I really love, the focus was on a particular Barn Conversion. The couple looking at the property were really enthused about the open plan living accommodation, the beautiful kitchen units with granite worktops, and the lovely Oak staircase. But, I couldn’t keep my eyes off the cheap and totally unsuitable doors, they had chosen. The doors were white painted, 6 panel, classic style which in a Georgian or mock Georgian home could look appropriate however, in a gorgeous barn conversion with lots of timber beams and traditional character these doors looked out of place.
Purchasing doors can be expensive but their are many doors on the market at competitive prices in appropriate styles. I suspect that when this barn conversion was done that doors had not been considered early enough and shortage of time led the owners or builder to choose them at a late stage in the process so having to choose something that was instock immediately.
I believe that the doors in a property should be given as much thought as we give to the furniture we choose for our homes. A timber door is a piece of furniture and can enhance the complete scheme and theme of a property.
