The Columbus Doors are amongst the most recognisable sets of doors in the whole world. Positioned as the entrance to the Rotunda, the US Capitol in Washington, the famous doors are the opening to a gallery displaying icons and paintings relating to historic events in the US.
The Columbus Doors are almost 17 feet high and almost 10 feet wide and they weigh about 10 tons. The doors are made from bronze and incorporate a number of icons and images depicting parts of Christopher Columbus' life. There are four panels on each door, which show significant events including Columbus starting his eventful journey from Pavos and his entry into Barcelona in 1493. There is a semi circular transom (a structural piece separating the door from the window or space above the door) which features the scene of Columbus's first landing in the New World in 1492. Within the intricate designs, there are various people who were significant to the life of Columbus and objects such as anchors and other nautical objects.
The doors were designed and constructed by Randolph Rogers who was born in New York and studied in Rome where he completed work on these impressive ornate styled doors. The doors were installed in 1871.
