I am a big fan of wooden toys. I really like the look and feel of them and I always think they seem a much better quality compared to the plastic alternatives. I have always liked wooden blocks. I liked them when I was a child and I am now buying them for my own little girl. She likes banging them together and creating towers. There is no way that plastic blocks could have the same appeal. I love the sound and weight when the wooden blocks fall and find it somewhat reassuring. Similarly, I really like wooden train sets. Fixing wooden tracks together and playing with wooden trains is so much more satisfying than plastic ones. Wooden doll's houses are another classic. There are a number of plastic castles and houses available but they really do lack the charm and wonder of the wooden ones.
I find it a bit sad that many of the classic wooden toys have been replaced or copied with cheap plastic designs. I appreciate that the wooden varieties may cost a little more but I am more than willing to pay a bit more for quality.
I think the same feeling can be applied to doors. For me, there is no comparison between a timber door and a Upvc external door . Timber doors have a certain character that you just don't get with a plastic door. There is something reassuring about the heavy solid feel of a wooden door. For something that is designed to secure your home and protect you from the outside, surely the most substantial material is the superior choice. Also a wooden door can age in a positive way while plastic merely deteriorates and loses its new clean appearance. There is a little more preparation and maintenance with a wooden external door but this is a longer term investment and ultimately ensures a longer life.
