People are increasingly asking about “Part L Doors” and “U-Values” in relation to doors. This reflects new legislation in building regulations which requires that energy efficient doors are fitted. With rising energy costs most of us are trying to improve the efficiency of our homes and this is where U-Values are relevant. We have a number of Part L doors within our collection.
What is this "U-Value"?
The U-Value relates to the amount of heat that can pass through the door frame and glass. A maximum value is stated which must not be exceeded so the lower the U-Value the better regarding insulation properties of your door. In other words, the U-Value tells you how thermally efficient your door is.
What is Part L?
Part L of the building regulations relates to Conservation of Fuel and Power and this is where thermal insulation requirements of new doors is covered. The requirements in the building regulations are continually updated so it is best to check the latest regulations in relation to doors (split into new dwellings and existing dwellings).
Part L compliant doors may not always be required for refurbishments, but if the Building Control Body (BCB) is overseeing your project it is best to check with them prior to purchasing new doors.
Part L doors are just as stylish as any other doors as you can see from the photo here of the oak external door, the Alsace Part L Door with a thermal value (u value) of 1.7 w/m2k.
Why buy Part L Doors?
Typically 80% of the energy in our homes is used for heating. Much of this heat is lost through poorly insulated roofs, walls, windows and doors. Therefore choosing energy efficient doors can significantly reduce your energy costs.
