A few years ago my partner and I went to Liguria in Northern Italy. We visited a few of the local towns and villages as well as the city of Genoa. Whilst in Genoa we had a tour of the city, which was very interesting. The architecture is stunning with beautiful detailing and external decoration.
During the tour our guide revealed that many of the buildings feature painted decorations for windows, doors and exterior adornments such as window boxes. This was a major revelation, as the entire group had not noticed that these architectural embellishments were merely painted on.
We were told that the painting of pretty doorways, windows and balconies was a cost saving measure and allowed the locals to create detailed designs on a budget.
The painters used elaborate shading to create the illusion of grand architectural features. Even once we were aware about the painting, it was difficult to say for certain which features were real and which were fake.
During this holiday we also visited a town called Portofino, which is a beautiful expensive resort, popular with celebrities and rich folks. We saw huge yachts in the harbour with teams of staff waiting on the wealthy owners and wondered whether this was the life of a lottery winner or a wealthy celebrity. There was no need for any fakery in Portofino as there was clearly a lot of money invested in the surroundings here and the price of a coffee certainly reflected the expensive setting.
