Here in West Yorkshire we have been lucky to avoid the terrible flooding that many other areas of the country have suffered and we have been discussing the shocking television footage in the Doorsan office this week. If you are one of the thousands of people affected by the flooding then our thoughts are with you. Sadly the bad weather appears to be with us for some time and there may be further problems for many homeowners.
So, what can you do to protect your home if you face the risk of flooding? The best defence is to prepare sandbags and place them around the bottom of your doors - front and back doors as well as your garage door. If you are in a rush you can make sandbags using pillowcases or even plastic bags and if you don't have any sand then soil can be used as an emergency substitute.
Make sure you have sufficient insurance cover so that if the worst happens you will be able to recover the damages to your home and belongings. If floods are imminent you will need to move valuable items and pets to a safe area, preferably above the ground floor rooms. Charge mobile phones while you still can and be prepared to turn off electricity, gas and water supplies. Make sure you have plenty of food supplies and clean bottled water in case the worst happens, if you have cool boxes then fill them with a few days provisions and store higher than ground level. If you decide to find shelter with friends or relatives, be sure to inform your family and neighbours so they know you are safe. Check on any vulnerable neighbours and help them if necessary.
If the floods have affected you then you may be left with damaged doors. We have already had calls in the office from people who will need new doors once the bad weather has passed. If you require a new door then take a look at our extensive website, which features a wide range of styles, colours and sizes of doors.
