On Saturday 7th September it was announced that Tokyo will host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympics Games. The Japanese capital came ahead of Istanbul and Madrid in the final vote which took place in Buenos Aires.
Tokyo is officially called "Tokyo Metropolis" and it is the largest metropolitan area in the world with over 13 million people living in the prefecture.
Tokyo hosted the Games in 1964 and the Olympic Bid Committee in Japan were delighted with the news, promising the world that they will host a wonderful Olympic Games. Four years ago Tokyo failed to get through the second round of the bid for the Olympic Games in 2016 so this time they focused heavily on the message that they were a safe and stable choice for hosting this global event. During the bidding process they made reference to their economic and political stability which highlighted weaknesses in the other bidding nations.
