I recently read an article mentioning the word façade, which struck a cord, as we in the timber door supply business speak to customers a great deal about the outside appearance of their properties when they are choosing external doors. Now is a particularly good time to choose a new external door as the spring and summer months are the best times to avoid bad weather interfering with the fitting process.
I decided to research the word façade as a matter of interest. Façade, when used as a figure of speech can describe the ‘face’ people show, as an alternative of the true expression of what they really think. Of course this is not the notion I was referring to when I think of a pleasing façade of a property. A façade usually refers to the exterior appearance of a building, usually the frontage, but not always, as is can be any view.
The word façade originates from the French language, which literally means face or frontage, though the previous post-classical Latin means facia. Architecturally speaking the façade of a building is the most important design aspect of a buildings appearance and will set the style of what will be found internally, it aim to stimulate the observer and make a statement in the properties setting along with its functionality. Many historic buildings facades are legally protected and if a building requires extensive renovation, due to disrepair, the façade is often the only remaining structure retained.
A film set or theme park attraction will often have a more temporary façade, which is supported from behind and only used for a short time. This also applies, in some respect, to shops and restaurants, which require façades designed to encourage customers to visit. The façades of our homes require a more permanent and quality construction and the timber doors we choose need to compliment the architectural style along with a representation of what will be seen internally.
