When you have selected your new interior timber doors and received delivery, what comes next? The fitting and finishing:- Who fits them? Do you or your Joiner hang them? Regardless of who fits them they need to be aware of some golden rules for fitting timber doors.
In this Blog I will discuss interior doors but please consider that there will be different finishes and techniques required for external timber doors. (next Blog)
The majority of timber doors are engineered, meaning constructed using an internal core usually made from mixed timber components to produce a strong and stable construction. The doors are then laminated with the decorative timber veneer which you have chosen such as Oak, Walnut etc. Some Pine Doors are all pine yet are generally still engineered to produce a stable product.
Many of the prerequisites I will mention may seem tedious, but believe me, if you want your doors to last and look good for many years they are a must.
If you have chose a pre-finished (varnished) door then the process of fitting will be quicker. However, if a small amount of the edges are shaved off, to allow for accurate fitting, then this area must be treated with a similar finish to prevent moisture ingress entering the door. Remember the top and bottom of the doors, which are not visible, will also need protection, along with underneath the hinges and inside the lock or latch cut outs.
When fitting all doors, whether pre-finished or ready to finish, they should be measured and adjusted to fit the prepared opening with latch and hinge cut outs made. The door should be offered into the opening to check that it fits correctly before final sealing takes place.
When staining an unfinished door, careful preparation is required with light sanding, in the direction of the grain, slightly rounding of the edges to help retain the stain. When smooth and dust free the door will be ready for primer and top coats of your chosen finish. There are a variety of recommended finishes available at Doorsan Ltd.
